As a daily metabolite of humans and many animals, scientists have been thinking about more environmentally friendly urine disposal methods. Earlier, we had heard of using urine to generate electricity for mobile phones or cars, or to use it for "bioconcrete". However, a research team from the University of Cape Town has developed the world's first batch of "biological bricks" made from human urine. In addition, the strength of this brick can also be adjusted up and down to meet various practical needs.

The researchers showed us a unique way to deal with human metabolic waste-making bricks.

It is reported that this technology is similar to a natural process-"microbial carbonate precipitation" that produces shells.

The loose sand is colonized by bacteria and produces urease on it. In the face of urine, this enzyme can break down one of these compounds (a chemical reaction that forms a calcium carbonate structure).

The University of Cape Town research team has developed the world's first bio-brick made from human urine.

For several months, the school ’s engineers have been experimenting with this process to produce materials with different shapes and tensile strengths.

The sand can be induced into a rectangular or columnar solid, and by testing different formulations, the team can produce bricks of various strengths tailored to their needs.

Researchers say they can use human urine to produce bricks of various strengths.

Of course, this process also has significant environmental benefits, because this bio-brick can be formed at room temperature.

For comparison, ordinary bricks need to be fired in a brick kiln at 1400 ° C (2550 ° F). The emission of carbon dioxide is its biggest by-product.

Moreover, bio-bricks based on urine can be molded with molds at room temperature.

Dyllon Randall, who supervised the study, said: The longer the bacteria act, the higher the brick hardness.

If a customer needs a brick that is 40% harder than limestone brick, you can increase the hardness of the finished product by extending the bacteria's 'growth time', and we can optimize this process.

With this method, we are expected to produce more environmentally friendly building materials in the future.

It is worth mentioning that this technology not only makes brick manufacturing more environmentally friendly, but also makes urine become "liquid gold".

The team pointed out that large amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium can be harvested in production and used as an important part of commercial fertilizers. This means that our brick making process can almost achieve 'zero waste'.

Randall said: "This example shows that what was originally considered to be waste is likely to have the potential to make a variety of environmentally friendly products. You can rethink and try to do similar things to any liquid waste.

LED Night Lights
