The layered structure of sodium manganese cathode material has the advantages of high theoretical capacity, low price and wide source, making it a popular research object for cathode materials of sodium ion batteries.

However, due to the narrow layer spacing of the sodium manganese cathode material, during the charging and discharging process, sodium ions with a larger radius will "crush" the structure of the cathode material during interlayer migration, which has become a key difficulty restricting the development of sodium ion batteries. In addition to the layer spacing, another important factor affecting the performance of sodium ion batteries is the sodium ion content in the layered structure. Professor Xia Hui ’s team pioneered the structural design and control method. In collaboration with Professor Gu Lin of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor Meng Ying of the University of California, San Diego, USA, on the basis of the layered structure of the birnessite, it successfully prepared both large layer spacing and high A layered nano positive electrode material with sodium ion content.

The specific capacity of the electrode made of this positive electrode material reaches 211.9 milliampere hours per gram, while the specific capacity of the positive electrode material of lithium batteries currently on the market is about 140 milliampere hours per gram. During the charging and discharging process, the structure of this positive electrode material is stable without phase change, and the volume change is only 2%. After 1000 cycles of charging and discharging, the specific capacity retention rate is as high as 94.6%, while the general standard of the specific capacity retention rate in the battery industry is about 80 %.
