According to foreign media New Atlas, a new molecule developed by scientists at Ohio State University can collect energy from the entire visible spectrum, absorb up to 50% more solar energy than current solar cells, and catalyze the energy to hydrogen. Hydrogen is regarded as a clean burning fuel in many countries and can power our vehicles in a low-emission future.

One way to produce hydrogen is to break it out of water. Usually, this is done by using electricity to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, but a potentially simpler and more effective method may be photocatalytic water splitting. Now the Ohio State University research team claims to have discovered one of the most effective photocatalytic molecules to date.

The molecule shows a unique ability to use light in the visible spectrum. In the past, most photocatalysts were concentrated on high-energy ultraviolet wavelengths. This photocatalyst can capture the energy of ultraviolet light until the visible spectrum and the near infrared range, which means that it can absorb 50% more solar energy than current solar cells. .

The researchers say that many previous attempts have also lost efficiency due to the use of two or more molecules in the catalyst. As these molecules exchange electrons, energy will be lost in these systems-Ohio State University's single molecule solution will not have this problem. The new photocatalyst in question is a form of rhodium. The researchers tested the LED lamp by irradiating an acidic solution containing active molecules in the laboratory and found that hydrogen gas was released.

Claudia Turro, director of the Ohio State University Center for Chemistry and Biophysical Dynamics, said: "It is unprecedented to store two electrons in a single molecule derived from two photons and use them together to make hydrogen."

Before this method becomes a commercially viable means of producing clean fuels, some problems still need to be solved. The main thing is that rhodium is rare and expensive. Turro said the team is trying to figure out how to make it from cheap materials and make its life longer. However, this research undoubtedly makes the process of photocatalytic decomposition of water to produce hydrogen closer to reality.

The research has been published in "Nature Chemistry".
