The production process of “directly manufacturing building materials for blast furnace hot slag” developed by this base uses green blast furnace slag as raw material to produce green and environmentally-friendly stone, which fills the technical blank for direct utilization of slag waste in China. This base was jointly established by China Building Materials Research Institute and Shandong Coking Group. At the beginning of 2011, Shandong Coking Group cooperated with China Building Materials Science Research Institute. After more than three years and thousands of experiments, we can now directly produce high-end building materials with blast furnace slag,” said Zhao Wei, head of the project research and development team and vice president of Shandong Coking Group.

According to reports, the replacement of traditional building materials with this material can reduce the mining of 3 to 8 tons of ore per ton, the utilization of 30 million tons of blast furnace slag, and the reduction of hundreds of millions of tons of mining per year. Comparing the market price of ceramic tiles, stone and mineral wool, the stone produced per ton of blast furnace slag can create an output value of 3,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan, and the use of 10 million tons of blast furnace slag will form a new industry.

Wang Qingtao, chairman of Shandong Coking Group, said that the production process of “direct manufacturing of building materials for blast furnace hot slag” has opened the prelude to the R&D base of China Building Materials Research Institute. In the future, it will focus on research and development to promote low-carbon and environmentally-friendly building materials and production processes. The goal is to build the R&D base into a new building materials R&D center and technology promotion center in Qingdao and even the whole country.
