Japan's Chubu Electric Power, Tokyo Gas, and Hinomoto Industries have jointly developed the hybrid overheated steam generator "Hybrid SHS" that makes full use of the characteristics of electric power and gas. It is used in industrial heating devices such as embedded ovens on the production line. Direct Industry will start selling related heating devices in November 2015.

Industrial superheated steam generators are mainly electric and gas fired. The former can precisely control the temperature, but there is a problem of large power consumption. The latter can reduce operating costs, but poor temperature control. The new product was changed to a hybrid method, which fully utilized the advantages of the above two methods, and realized the "completeness" of power consumption reduction and precise temperature control. The primary energy consumption can be reduced by about 35% compared to the original electric overheated steam generator.

In order to implement new products, the three companies developed two technologies, gas units and control systems. In terms of the gas unit, a metal woven combustion chamber in which the combustion surface is made of a heat-resistant metal fiber woven fabric and the shape can be processed in accordance with the object to be heated is used. Thus, the shape of a combustion chamber in which the combustion exhaust gas and the saturated steam can be efficiently exchanged has been developed. The flame length of the combustion chamber is short, so the combustion chamber can be reduced. In addition, a configuration in which a double steam pipe is provided in the gas unit is adopted, whereby the miniaturization is achieved while ensuring the heat transfer area.

For the control system, the load sharing ratio of electricity and gas can be optimized according to the set temperature. For example, only the electric heater is used in the low-load operation, and the electric heater and the gas combustion chamber are used in the middle load and the high-load operation. In this way, the temperature can be controlled with an accuracy of ±5°C relative to the set temperature while reducing power consumption.

The rated gas flow of the gas unit is 1.9m3/h, and the capacity of the electric heater is 1.8kW×4. In addition to generating superheated steam up to 400°C and 0.2 MPa, hot air with an air volume of 310 to 1480 m3 can also be produced. The price varies depending on the target production equipment and is generally around 3 million yen.

Superheated steam can heat metals, resins, ceramics, and other non-metallic materials for a short period of time. Therefore, applications in the field of factory ovens, etc., are expanding. In addition, superheated steam is also able to lock the deliciousness of foods in an oxygen-free state, and is therefore also widely used in cooking ovens for food factories and homes.
