A research team at Nagoya University in Japan reported on the latest issue of the American Academy of Sciences’ online edition that they have discovered a gene that can make rice larger. This discovery will hopefully promote rice production.

The research team compared the genes of the Japanese rice variety “Nipponbuk” with very short grain of rice and “Kasalath” with the slender rice variety of Indian rice and found that the GW6a gene can control the grain size, and the function of this gene in “Kasalath” is better than “ Nipponbare is a lot stronger.

As a result, the team implanted the GW6a gene of “Kasalath” into Nipponbare. As a result, the “Nipponbare” rice grain became larger and its volume and weight increased by about 15%.

In addition, the research team also found that after the GW6a gene was implanted, the "Nipponbare" plant itself also increased. By increasing the function of this gene, the grains of rice can become larger, and the function of grains can be curtailed.

The research team pointed out that the same technology may also be applied to wheat and corn. The researchers believe that the results of this study will help increase the production of cereals significantly, and it is expected to contribute to reducing the world food crisis.
