New self-growth materials become as strong as fitness

Researchers at Hokkaido University in Japan have developed a new material that can become stronger after repeated stretching like muscle building. It is expected to be used to make flexible "mechanical armor" in the future.

The research, published in the American Journal of Science, was inspired by the growth characteristics of skeletal muscle. After training in the gym, skeletal muscle fibers will tear, and the blood will transport new amino acids to produce stronger new fibers. The researchers designed a hydrogel material with a double network structure, which has two layers of polymer networks, one layer is hard and brittle, and the other layer is soft and tough. This hydrogel material is immersed in a solution containing single molecules. These single molecules are like amino acids in the blood and can build a new "muscle" of polymer.

Research shows that when the hydrogel is stretched, the hard and brittle polymer chain will break, and the single molecules in the solution will be connected to the polymer chain, making the material harder, and after repeated stretching, The strength and hardness of this material can be increased by 1.5 times and 23 times, and the weight of the polymer can be increased by 86%.
