According to a news report quoted by British media on March 10, recently, Dutch researchers imitated the trapped astronaut played by Martha Damon of Mars Rescue, and planted potatoes and peas in the simulated Martian soil provided by NASA. The rye, arugula, radish and cress produce a surprisingly high yield compared to the vegetables cultivated in potted soil.

The head of the study, Wagen Wamlink of Wagening University, said: “This surprised us. Experiments have shown that simulated Martian soils have great potential if they are properly formulated and watered well. ."

It is reported that this is the second time that the team simulated the cultivation of alien soil crops. The first experiment was conducted using small cans. At the same time, due to improper proportion of soil moisture, most plants planted on the lunar simulation soil in the first experiment were killed. But in the second experiment they survived.

The researchers planted the same crops in the Mars simulation soil and the Earth potted soil, then added mowing and fertilizer, but they did not eat Mars to imitate crops grown from the soil. Wamelinck said: "Mars modeling soil contains iron, lead and other heavy metals, as well as arsenic, mercury and other elements. If the crops absorb these elements, the resulting fruit will also be toxic."

The research team hopes to conduct a third experiment with the focus on food safety. At present, they have launched a crowdfunding campaign and plan to plant a new batch of crops in April this year, including potatoes and peas.
