The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Research Promotion in Germany, a top applied research institute in Europe, has discovered a new way to prevent decay of perishable items by applying solar cooling systems.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg, Germany, believe that solar energy can be used for building air conditioning systems, so it can also be used to cool fruits and other perishable foods.

In the application plan for solar refrigeration technology for Mediterranean food and agricultural products, scientists conducted a pilot study on this theory, namely, through the construction of a solar power plant to provide refrigeration for wine and milk produced at a winery in Tunisia and a milk factory in Morocco. .

Researchers use an aggregating solar collector that reflects light through a solar reflector to an adsorption device to convert solar radiation to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tomas Nuñez, a scientist at the research facility, explained: “This extremely high-temperature hot water is a necessary condition for dissipating the common internal high temperatures of adsorption refrigeration equipment.”

He explained that we use heat instead of electricity to provide refrigeration for milk products. In the zero temperature condition produced by the adsorption refrigeration equipment, we apply an ethylene glycol aqueous solution to prevent the water from freezing.

The cold accumulator then collects the solution, pumps it in and passes through a heat exchanger where the milk product is cooled.

Dr Nuñez and his colleagues used another system slightly different from their cooled dairy products to cool the wine. The refrigerant is passed through the coiled tubing into the wine fermentor, instead of pumping the ethylene glycol aqueous solution freezer through the heat exchanger.

Dr. Nuñez said: “The rural areas in the region have abundant sunshine sunshine conditions. Our method is ideal for use under such conditions. Due to lack of water resources and energy sources or no reliable source of energy, there is no conventional method of refrigeration in the area. ”

He also said that the appearance of the sun is the beginning of refrigeration, especially in the peak period of the required temperature, this technology has environmental significance and reduces the pressure on the demand for electricity.

The solar refrigeration system is still in the experimental demonstration stage and does not have the conditions for market supply. However, Dr. Nuñez believes that this technology will have operational significance in the rural, chemical and cosmetic industries in the future.
