Beijing time, January 21st news, carbon emissions is one of the important factors affecting climate change, including the development of plants that can absorb carbon dioxide to companies to compensate for carbon emissions, and other projects are considered to be ways to reduce the human carbon footprint. Now, Korean scientists have developed a breakthrough concept that can convert carbon dioxide into usable energy.

Scientists at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology have developed a new system to continuously produce electricity and hydrogen by decomposing carbon dioxide in a water-based solution. The inspiration for this technology is that many carbon dioxide produced by humans is absorbed by the ocean, and the acidity of the ocean will increase.

Researchers use this concept to "dissolve" carbon dioxide in water to trigger an electrochemical reaction. When the acidity rises, the number of protons increases, and they can attract electrons at a very high rate. This concept can be used to develop battery systems.

The composition of this battery system is similar to a fuel cell, including a positive electrode (sodium metal), a separator, and a negative electrode (catalyst). In the system, the catalyst is contained in water and connected to the positive electrode through a wire. Injecting carbon dioxide into the water, the electrochemical reaction will start, generating electricity and hydrogen. Not only the electrical energy generated during the reaction can be used, but the hydrogen produced can also provide power to the car.

At present, this system can decompose up to 50% of carbon dioxide. Although it is only operated on a small scale, the result is still impressive.

Guntae Kim, a professor at the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, said in a statement, "Carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies provide a way to respond to global climate change and have recently attracted a lot of attention. The key to this technology , Is how to convert chemically stable carbon dioxide molecules into other substances. Our new system solves this problem using the principle of carbon dioxide decomposition. "(Compilation / Frost Leaf)
