Canada launches new solar toothbrush without toothpaste

Canadian researchers have developed a new type of toothbrush that does not require toothpaste and uses solar energy to create a chemical reaction in the mouth to clean teeth.

Retired professor of dentistry from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, Dr. Komiya Bungsong designed this first non-traditional toothbrush model 15 years ago. Now, Komiya Bonshon and his colleague Dr. Gry Usowa are recruiting volunteers to test their new toothbrush, the Solarey-J3X.

The Soladey-J3X consists of a solar cell and a base that transmits electrons to the front of the toothbrush through a lead wire. The electrons form a chemical reaction with the acid in the oral cavity, which can remove tartar and kill bacteria. The new toothbrush does not require toothpaste, as long as it has the same amount of light as the solar energy calculator requires. Researchers have tested the toothbrush for bacterial flora that causes periodontal disease and demonstrated that the toothbrush can cause "complete death of the fungal cell."
