China's activated carbon industry is in the stage of rapid development, but the situation of China's activated carbon production equipment is not optimistic. Both chemical and physical methods use only a few furnace types, and the production equipment is simple and backward. For example, in chemical methods, most manufacturers in the country use flat-plate furnaces and converters, which not only produce a small variety of products, but also have low quality, and there are real-life situations such as staggering energy consumption, serious environmental pollution, labor intensity of factories, and poor operating conditions. This status quo seriously restricts the development of China's activated carbon industry. To this end, production companies urgently need to develop a new type of activated carbon vertical activation furnace. The HTSL activated carbon vertical activation furnace reported in this paper has been identified as the first in China by the relevant departments, adding new equipment for the further development of China's activated carbon industry.

1 Design concept of activated carbon vertical activation furnace

Activated carbon production has its own specific process conditions. By consulting a large amount of data, careful scientific theoretical analysis and accurate calculations, it is believed that the chemical activated carbon production equipment should solve the following problems:

(1) The reaction of chemical production of activated carbon needs to be carried out in the range of 400-6000C, and a certain activation time can be completed;

(2) The raw materials for the production of activated carbon (wood chips) and the thermal conductive materials of the activated carbon itself are very poor, and it is necessary to solve the problem of uniform activation in the production process;

(3) The activator used in the production of chemical activated carbon is acid or salt such as zinc chloride or phosphoric acid, so it is necessary to solve the problems of acid corrosion resistance of the equipment during high temperature activation;

(4) The traditional furnace type (converter, grid furnace, etc.) requires a long time before the production of the oven process, which affects the production efficiency;

(5) Solving the problems of large consumption of traditional furnace fuel, poor working conditions, and poor thermal insulation effect;

(6) Do a good job of waste heat recovery, activator recovery, reduce production costs and manufacturing costs, save labor and energy.

To solve the above problems, that is, to grasp the key to the chemical activated carbon production equipment, this paper takes this as the starting point and carries out the following design.

2 Activated carbon vertical activation furnace structure

The newly designed activated carbon activation furnace is vertical. The concept of “vertical” is to recover from the top of the equipment and the waste heat exhaust gas. The middle part is the activation chamber and the end is the discharge port. The main body of the activation furnace is cylindrical, with a height of 5000mm and a maximum diameter of 4300mm, and a body weight of 8000kg. It is composed of a two-layer structure - an outer casing and a furnace. The shell material of the furnace body is steel plate, the inner shell is heat-insulating blanket and refractory concrete, and the inner layer furnace is an activated warehouse. The feeding volume is 1.5m3, which can produce 300t of activated carbon per year. The activated tank is equipped with a specially designed stirring fin, which can make the activation even when it is rotating forward, prevent the activated material from plasticizing and agglomerating, and can make the discharge completely and quickly when reversing (the stirring shaft is a water-cooling device). The coal burning furnace is located on the bottom side of the main body of the furnace. After reasonable design, the furnace not only makes the activation chamber warm up quickly but also saves fuel to a large extent.

The exhaust pipe of the furnace body is provided with a waste heat recovery device (waste heat furnace), and the flue gas generated in the furnace is rotated by the two-layer structure to be heated and activated, and then exhausted through the waste heat recovery furnace, so that the waste heat can be fully recovered.

In addition, in the production process, the control of various parameters is completed in the console. Not only can the rotation speed and steering of the stirring fin be controlled at the same time; the activation in the activation chamber can be monitored by the instrument; and the fan can be controlled to adjust the wind speed and air volume at any time to make the activation parameter more reasonable.

The installation of the activation furnace should be in a two-storey building with the main equipment installed on the first floor. The height of the indoor lifting frame should be in the range of 5000-6000mm. The operation control test during production is completed on the first floor, and the materials, medicines and exhausts are carried out on the second floor. In addition, the waste heat furnace and the water curtain condensation activator recovery device are installed on the second floor.

3 Activated carbon vertical activation production test

After the design and manufacture of the activation furnace, the on-site production test shows that the various indexes have fully met the design requirements and can adapt to various technological conditions for the production of activated carbon by chemical methods. Two tests were carried out, using wood chips as raw materials and phosphoric acid as activator for the production of sugar charcoal and coke. The main indicators of the products are shown in Table 1.

4 vertical activation furnace technical standards

4.1 Performance standards

(1) The temperature of the activated warehouse shell is 8000C; (2) The working volume of the activated tank is 1.5 m3; (3) The temperature of the vertical shaft condensate is 500C; (4) The surface temperature of the shell when working is <500C; (5) The recovery rate of phosphoric acid is 85%. (6) The heating rate can reach 7000C in 70min.

4.2 Geometric Standards

(1) The outer dimensions of the furnace body are 5000mm high and the diameter is 4300mm; (2) the shell height is 3000mm; (3) the shell diameter is 2500mm; (4) the bottom area is 1200mm × 800mm; (5) the coal filling furnace mouth (height × width) 350mm×450mm; (6) slag opening (height×width) 350mm×450mm; (7) activation bin hole φ420mm; (8) exhaust pipe port φ300mm; (9) exhaust pipe φ326mm; (10) unloading Gate φ219×6; (11) Stirring fin spiral angle 300; (12) Activated bin actual volume 2.6m3; (13) Vertical shaft speed 3r/min; (14) Vertical shaft drive power 1.5kW; (15) Hair dryer 2.4Kw; (16) Air volume 35 m3/min; (17) Wind pressure 15.33 kPa.

5 Conclusion

The HTSL activated carbon vertical activation furnace was appraised by the Harbin Science and Technology Commission and organized by the Expert Committee. The characteristics of the furnace type are still the first in China and are considered to have the following advantages:

(1) Activated furnace production of activated carbon is fast, balanced, well insulated, short cooling time, energy saving, and improved production efficiency;

(2) It can recover the activator in the exhaust gas, do not emit black smoke in the activated warehouse, reduce the pollution of the air, improve the production environment, and improve the yield of activated carbon;

(3) It can recover waste heat, convert it into hot water for winter picking, bathing for employees, and save fuel;

(4) Reducing the process from carbonization to activation in the production of activated carbon, which can be completed by adjusting temperature and heat preservation in an activated warehouse, that is, reducing production links, reducing labor, and reducing labor intensity of producers.

(5) The activated carbon vertical activation furnace has a small footprint compared with other furnace types, and the utilization rate of the production workshop is high, which can reduce the investment in project engineering costs.

(6) The production process has the instrument display and high degree of automation, so the quality of the produced products is good.
