Japan Fuji Film Co., Ltd. used flexographic printing plate manufacturing technology to develop a flexible board that uses aluminum and stainless steel plywood as a base material, and also improves heat resistance while also providing insulation on the aluminum surface.

Fujifilm Co., Ltd. has independently developed a flexible solar cell substrate that combines high heat resistance and high insulation properties to meet the high temperatures above 500°C required for CIGS solar cell manufacturing processes. The conversion efficiency of 18.1% has been achieved on small-area CIGS solar cells, and the conversion efficiency can reach 15.0% even if a plurality of solar cells are connected in series on one substrate. The weight per unit area is half that of glass substrates and can be used for other new applications.

CIGS solar cells are thin-film type solar cells using compound semiconductors such as copper, indium, gallium, and selenium in the light-absorbing layer, which have high conversion efficiency and production efficiency. A flexible substrate refers to a flexible and deformable printed circuit board. If a flexible substrate is used to fabricate a solar cell, not only weight reduction but also mass production at a low cost can be achieved, and a CIGS solar cell requires a high temperature of 500° C. or more during its manufacture. This is true for the original resin substrate and the stainless steel flexible substrate. It is a difficult problem to solve.

This time, the plywood made of aluminum and stainless steel developed by Fujifilm using an offset printing plate manufacturing technology is not an aluminum element with a large proportion of material length change as the temperature rises, and it inhibits the temperature change caused by the production. Distortion, which can produce more efficient solar cells.

Fujifilm Co., Ltd. and the Japan Institute of Industrial Technology, independent administrative agency used the flexible substrate to jointly develop a CIGS solar cell and confirmed that it has a high conversion efficiency. The use of the lightweight nature of the flexible substrate will help new applications such as solar cells used in automobiles and satellites, or used in building materials. FUJIFILM will continue to provide assistance for the practical application of lightweight, high-efficiency and low-cost CIGS solar cells through this flexible substrate.
